For a year and a half I owned an 87 Volkswagen Vanagon. I purchased it, my first car, on my birthday in 2009, and sold it when I drove up to San Francisco at the beginning of my trip in November 2010. I called it the Vanagallery and operated it as a mobile art space with guerilla concerts, roving exhibits, really really free markets, as well as a temporary shelter. It had a bed and plenty of room for blankets, bikes, etc. I was sad to leave it behind. Last week in Amsterdam I stumbled upon these three Swiss travellers in their broken down Van. The clutch wasn’t engaging. They called a repair service and a newer vw van showed up. In the middle of uploading, my iphone completely died, so I didn’t have as many photos to choose from here. Anyway, below you can Gabriel, Remy and Peter and their VW T2, as well as the repairman they’re negotiating with. We exchanged some ideas for a while (they were stuck without the part they needed and would be delayed at least 5 days) but ultimately I took my leave. And now I’m in Berlin photographing the millions of varieties of able workhorse VW Vans.
